Bike Week LA
Program
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, also known as Metro, hosted Bike Week LA 2015 from Sunday, May 10 to Saturday, May 16 to engage a wide range of communities across Los Angeles to increase the bicycle modal share in the county. The Los Angeles car problem creates detrimental public health, safety, environmental, and economic hazards. To mitigate the issue, Metro is aggressively expanding light rail, bus, pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure and has made sustainable and active transportation key elements in regional planning efforts.
I planned Bike Week LA to serve as the moment when Metro and other government agencies can boost awareness of their commuter transportation programs, develop stakeholder communities, and invite commuters to ride their bicycles to work. This year the theme was “Don’t Be Traffic, Ride a Bike.” A press event kicked-off Bike Week with city leaders and speaker panel on Monday, blessing of the bicycles on Tuesday, group rides and a bike-in movie on Wednesday, Bike to Work Day and a community curated art show on Thursday, and a grand finale festival on Friday.
The outreach events embraced community and culture as a means to attract more people to consider bicycling as a viable option for commuting to work. Metro’s role as a regional rideshare leader promotes this and encourages more commuters to become part of the beautiful mixture of activists, parents, children, workers, planners, artists, and so many more who pedal as a way of life.
